Moonie State School was started because there was no other school nearby.

Mr Jack Ford donated a part of his property, 'Deepwater', as a school reserve so the community could have a school.

The original school building came from Wambo Creek early in 1962. It had previously been at Millbank near Kogan. Moonie State School was first called Deepwater State School and opened on 14 May 1962. The Official Opening was on 2 August later that year.

In 1962, The P&C Committee applied to the Education Department to change the school's name to Moonie State School.

On Saturday 5 May 2012, the school celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Celebrations were held at the school and the Sports Club.
